Countdown to the Challenge!

21 Aug

It’s amazing how time flies! There are just 10 (and a half) days left until we kick-off the 2nd Annual NY Locavore Challenge. One of our staff challenges this year is to do a better job about posting to the blog before, during and after the month. You’ll hopefully hear from every staff person in the NOFA-NY office and some fun guest bloggers along the way too. Make sure to keep recruiting friends and family to join you in the challenge. We can’t have enough people signed up!

Today’s post is written by Lea Kone-NOFA-NY, Assistant Director and lead Locavore staff person.

Lea:

I’ve been on the road a lot lately and the month of August has seemingly vanished before my eyes. I’m now aware that there are just about 10 days left in the month and 10 days to prepare for the Locavore Challenge (both planning the overall challenge and preparing myself for my personal challenge). I’m freaking out a little bit about both of these things-but I know if I do just a few things every day to prepare it will all come together just fine.

This post and the posts over the following days are going to suggest some tips and tasks that we can do to best prepare our selves for a month of conscious local eating, community building and social action.

Task #1: Register for the Challenge. Seems simple enough but I know there are dozens of you out there who are planning on taking the challenge but haven’t gone online to register yet. No excuses, register now: http://www.nofany.org/events/ny-locavore-challenge/register-now

Task #2: Plan out your month. Are you taking a 250 mile diet challenge? Hosting a potluck? Joining a CSA? Right down in your calendar what you have committed to, post the list on your refrigerator door, tell your friends and family so that they can help cheer you on/keep you accountable.

Task #3: Spend a few minutes thinking about why you signed up for the challenge, what you hope to discover/accomplish, and what you think the most difficult thing for you will be. Write it down on a piece of paper, fold it up, put it in an envelope and give it to a friend. Tell your friend to return it to you at the end of the month (we’ll talk about this note again then).

Task #4: Enjoy your Sunday. Go to a market near you, tend to your garden, cook a big Sunday meal with your friends or family and enjoy the warmth of August and the long evenings while they are still upon us. September, as we know will be here in no time.
